In a development that could reshape Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) leadership dynamics, Virat Kohli is reportedly not keen on taking up the captaincy for the upcoming 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This revelation comes after extensive discussions between Kohli and the franchise management during the leadership vacuum that emerged ahead of the season.
Sources close to the franchise suggest that multiple discussions have occurred with senior Indian players within the RCB squad. Among them, Rajat Patidar has emerged as a leading candidate to take over the captaincy from IPL 2025 onwards. Patidar has demonstrated significant leadership credentials, most notably guiding Madhya Pradesh to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, where they finished as runners-up to Mumbai. With 428 runs in nine innings, he was the second-highest run-scorer of the season, showcasing both form and temperament.
#RCB to announce its captain tomorrow? Virat Kohli or Rajat Patidar? Or someone else.

Apart from Patidar, Krunal Pandya is also being considered for the role. The franchise holds Krunal’s leadership acumen in high regard, given his successful tenure as Baroda’s captain in domestic cricket. Having consistently been a part of RCB’s leadership discussions, Krunal remains a strong contender should the management opt for a more experienced hand at the helm.
RCB has scheduled a special media gathering on February 13, where a key announcement is expected. Director of Cricket Mo Babat, Head Coach Andy Flower, and other key franchise representatives are set to be in attendance. There is also speculation that Dinesh Karthik, who has played a pivotal role in navigating the leadership discussions, may be present at the event.
With the IPL 2025 season fast approaching, RCB fans are eagerly awaiting clarity on the team’s captaincy situation. Whether it will be Patidar, Krunal, or another surprise pick, the decision will undoubtedly shape the franchise’s fortunes in their pursuit of an elusive IPL title.
