In a major disciplinary decision, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has suspended Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat for one year after he was disqualified from the World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, for exceeding the 57kg weight limit. The decision comes after the federation deemed his explanation “unsatisfactory.”
Sehrawat was disqualified last month after weighing 1.7 kilograms over the prescribed limit in the 57kg category. The WFI issued a show-cause notice on September 23, seeking an explanation for the lapse. After reviewing his response, submitted on September 29, and obtaining input from his support staff, the WFI disciplinary committee concluded that Aman’s reply did not provide a satisfactory justification for the violation.
The committee subsequently decided to suspend him from all wrestling-related activities—both national and international—starting September 23. His coaching staff, meanwhile, received an official warning for failing to monitor the athlete’s preparation and weight management effectively.
In its suspension letter, the federation highlighted that Aman had joined the preparatory camp in Porec 18 days prior to his scheduled bout on September 14, giving him sufficient time to maintain his weight and conditioning. The WFI expressed disappointment over his lack of discipline and professionalism, especially considering his stature as an Olympic medallist.
“Failure to adhere to these standards, particularly in managing your weight, has not only impacted your personal credibility but also tarnished the image of the nation on the global stage, causing disappointment among the wrestling fraternity and supporters,” the letter stated.
The federation further added that Aman’s negligence had “deprived India of a potential medal” and resulted in a “significant financial loss” due to the government’s expenditure on his training and participation.
The one-year suspension could prove costly for Aman Sehrawat’s career trajectory, potentially affecting his preparations for the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled from September 30 to October 3. The suspension means he will be unable to compete or participate in any national camps or international tournaments during this period.
This is not the first time Indian wrestling has faced disciplinary setbacks related to weight management. Aman’s case marks the third such incident in just over a year, following the controversies involving Vinesh Phogat during the Paris 2024 Olympics and Neha Sangwan at the 2025 World Under-20 Championships.
The WFI has emphasized that strict compliance with fitness and discipline standards is mandatory for all athletes representing India at the global level. The federation has also hinted at reinforcing its monitoring mechanisms in training camps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
While Aman Sehrawat’s suspension serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline in professional sports, it also raises questions about the role of coaching staff and support systems in ensuring athletes meet competition requirements. The young wrestler, once hailed as India’s brightest prospect after his Olympic success, now faces a crucial test of resilience as he works toward a comeback after the ban ends.
