The "Most Valuable Player" in IPL is awarded to the cricketer with the most points in the entire IPL season. Interestingly, the term "Most Valuable Player" came into existence in 2013. From the inaugural edition of the IPL until 2012, the award was known as "Man of the Tournament". Jos Buttler won the Most Valuable Player in IPL 2022. Shane Watson is the first cricketer to win the Most Valuable Player / Man of the Tournament award in IPL 2008. The Australian all-rounder played for Rajasthan Royals during the initial years of the tournament. Shane Watson scored 472 runs in just 15 matches at a strike rate of 151.77. Also, he scalped 15 wickets during the season and received the Most Valuable Players award.
Playing for Deccan Chargers, Adam Gilchrist became the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The Australian wicketkeeper-batsman captained the team and also led it to victory. Gilchrist made sure to lead the team from the front and give his best while playing for the franchise. Also, he scored 495 runs in 2009 season with a strike rate of 152.30 and became the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2009.
Sachin Tendulkar's form was out of the ordinary in IPL 2010. The then captain of Mumbai Indians fulfilled his duties as a captain by taking the team to the finals and proved himself as a successful batsman scoring 618 runs in just 15 matches with just 132.6 strike.

During IPL 2011, Chris Gayle played for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The master storm made his IPL 2011 debut and it was clearly the start of Chris Gayle's formidable batting era with a bang. RCB opener Gayle scored 608 runs in just 12 matches at an average of 67.55 and an impressive strike rate of 183.13. Chris Gayle scored the most runs in 2011 and hence won the Most Valuable Players.
Sunil Narine proved himself as one of the biggest assets of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2012. Sunil Narine showing his skills as a clever bowler. He contributed to KKR's maiden IPL title in 2012. He took 24 wickets in 15 matches with an economy rate of 5.47.
Five years after the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, Shane Watson once again became the Most Valuable Player. He is the first cricketer in IPL history to win this title twice. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Shane Watson played some incredible innings to take the team to the playoffs. He scored 543 runs in 16 matches at an impressive strike rate of 142.89 and an average of 38.78 and also took 13 wickets at an economy rate of 7.15.
IPL 2014 is one of the most important years of Glenn Maxwell's cricketing career. Till that time he could not register his name as one of the leading cricketers of Australian cricket team, but IPL 2014 changed the perspective of him. He had a great season playing for Kings XI Punjab. Also, he contributed the most and was one of the important reasons for taking the team to the final against Kolkata Knight Riders. Unfortunately, Kings XI Punjab failed to clinch their maiden IPL trophy but his teammate became the Most Valuable Player of the season with 552 runs.
Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Andre Russell became the Most Valuable Player of IPL 2015 with 312 points. The Jamaican all-rounder recorded himself as one of the best this season with both bat and ball. He scored 326 runs with an impressive strike rate of 192.89. Not only in batting, he is an all-rounder taking 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.96. Because of this, Andre Russell got the Most Valuable Players Award in IPL 2015.
Royal Challengers Bangalore might have failed to clinch the IPL trophy, but the team definitely had some of the best players to have played for the franchise. Virat Kohli is one of the biggest assets of RCB. Virat Kohli scored the most runs in a single edition of IPL in 2016. He scored 973 runs at an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03 including 4 centuries and won the Most Valuable Player award with 356.5 points.
Playing for Rising Pune Supergiants, Ben Stokes scored 270 points and became the Most Valuable Player of IPL 2017. He excelled with both the bat and the bowling. English all-rounder Ben Stokes, while playing with the bat, scored 316 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 142.98 and while bowling, he took 12 wickets at an economy rate of 7.18.

Sunil Narine became the second cricketer after Shane Watson to become the Most Valuable Player of the IPL twice. After IPL 2012, he once again won the prestigious award in 2018. In the year 2012, Sunil Narine scored 357 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 189.89 and took 17 wickets at an economy rate of 7.65. One of his most impressive innings of IPL 2018 is his fifty in just 17 balls against RCB.
After Sunil Narine in 2018, once again a KKR player became the Most Valuable Player of IPL 2019. Andre Russell also became the third cricketer after Shane Watson and Sunil Narine to win the MVP award twice in IPL history. In the 2019 IPL, he scored 510 runs in just 14 matches at an exceptional strike rate of 204.81. He not only restricted himself with the bat but also took 11 wickets for KKR while bowling mostly in the death overs.
IPL 2020 belonged to Jofra Archer as he won the Most Valuable Player award. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, this England fast bowler took 20 wickets in 14 matches and set the stadium on fire with his firepower. His best knocks of the season were 3/19, with an economy rate of 6.55.
The Most Valuable Player of IPL 2021 is Harshal Patel of Royal Challengers Bangalore. With 264.5 points, the cricketer had an amazing season this year. From taking crucial wickets to winning the Purple Cap, the game-changer of the season, the highest wicket-taker in the IPL. He did all this. This year he has taken 32 wickets. Also, he also took 4 wicket haul and 5 wicket haul in this season.
The Rajasthan Royals opener single-handedly led his team to the final and was crowned the Most Valuable Player of the season in what has been an impressive campaign for the England cricketer. Butler also received the Orange Cap Award for scoring the most runs in the season. The Royals opener scored 863 runs in 17 matches with four hundreds.
