England surpassed Australia, which had previously amassed 494 runs at the expense of six wickets against South Africa in Sydney in 1910.
The highest scorers for the hosts were Clem Hill (191) and Warren Bardsley (132). Until Thursday, Australia held the record for the next two entries in the tally. The second was 482/5 against the Proteas in Adelaide in 2012, and 475/2 against England at The Oval in 1934.
