New Zealand had set a target of 359 runs for India. In response, Yashasvi gave the team a great start and scored the eighth half-century of his Test career. The record for most runs in a calendar year in home Test matches is held by former Australian captain Michael Clarke, who scored a total of 1407 runs in 2012. He is followed by Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 1126 runs in 2006.

With this, 22-year-old Yashasvi became the youngest Indian to do so. In this case, he left behind Dilip Vengsarkar who completed 1000 runs in 1979 at the age of 23.
Yashasvi has become the batsman to score the most runs in a calendar year on home soil in Tests. In this case, he has surpassed former Indian batsman Gundappa Vishwanath who had scored 1047 runs in a calendar year on home soil in 1979. Yashasvi has also surpassed former Indian captain Virat Kohli in this matter who had scored 964 runs in 2016 and 898 runs in 2017.
