Scoring runs in Test matches is no easy task, which is why we see most teams scoring at a rate of three runs per over in red-ball matches. However, sometimes batsmen bat fast and post big scores in a single day. While this is not uncommon, it would be wrong to say that teams have never batted together on the same day in Test cricket before. On the contrary, there have been many instances where teams and in some cases both sides have combined to score more than 500 runs in a single day of Test cricket. In December 2022, Pakistan faced England in Rawalpindi. On the first day of the Test, England's batsmen performed brilliantly and scored 506 runs for the loss of just four wickets. These runs were scored in just 75 overs. In which England batsmen Jack Crawley (122), Ben Duckett (107) and Ollie Pope (104) and Harry Brook (153) scored brilliant centuries and by the end of the day's play, England scored 506/4.
It happened on August 17, 1935 during the fifth Test of the Test series between England and South Africa being played at the Oval. Starting in a strong position on the third day, England batsmen put pressure on the South African bowlers. The hosts resumed play at 313/4 on the third day and added 221 runs to declare the innings at 534/6, with Wally Hammond scoring 161 and Maurice Leyland scoring 148. The scoreboard kept moving throughout the day and South Africa scored 287/6 and the match ended in a draw, but not before 508 runs were scored during the day.
In Colombo in 2002, Sri Lanka were 32 for no loss on the first day after bowling out Bangladesh for just 161. The next day, Sri Lankan batsmen made a flurry of runs. By the time they declared at 541 for 9, 509 runs had been scored in just one day. Thanks to superb knocks from Aravinda de Silva (206) and captain Sanath Jayasuriya (145), the hosts bowled out Bangladesh for 184 in the second innings and won by an innings and 196 runs.
After bowling out South Africa for 273, England finished the first day of the Test at 28/0. On the second day Jack Hobbs scored a double century while Herbert Sutcliffe and Frank Woolley also scored centuries and England declared the innings at 531/2, meaning they had added 503 runs for the loss of two wickets on the second day. At stumps on the second day South Africa were 19 for no loss, meaning a total of 522/2 was added on the day.
The most runs scored in a single day in Test cricket was in July 1936 when England and India faced each other. In the second Test of the three-match series, the match saw a total of 588 runs being scored for the loss of six wickets on the second day of the match. England scored 398/6 on the second day while India scored 190 runs without loss before play was called off. The match was drawn, but it went down in the history books as the match with the most runs scored in just one day of Test cricket.
