Mohammad Shami was born on 3 September 1990 in Sahaspur village of Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh. His father Tausif Ali Ahmed was a farmer. The family was poor, but his father was determined to make his son a cricketer. He himself was fond of cricket, but could not progress due to lack of facilities. His dream was fulfilled by his youngest son Mohammad Shami.

Shami's sharp bowling made him a star of India. His net worth is estimated to be around Rs 55 to 65 crore ($78 million) by 2025. A major part of his earnings come from BCCI salary, IPL contracts and brand endorsements.
He is included in BCCI's Grade A contract and gets an annual fee of Rs 5 crore. Apart from this, he gets a fee of Rs 15 lakh for every Test match, Rs 6 lakh for every ODI and Rs 3 lakh for every T20I. Due to continuous playing, his annual income from BCCI alone exceeds Rs 78 crore.

Shami also earned a lot of money from IPL. After Delhi Daredevils, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for Rs 10 crore in the 2025 season. Till now Shami's earnings from IPL have been more than Rs 50 crore.

Shami is associated with many big brands like Nike, Puma, CEAT Tires and Vision 11. He charges around Rs 1 crore for each advertisement. His annual endorsement income reaches around Rs 23 crore.
He has a luxurious farmhouse of 150 bighas in Amroha, which is worth around Rs 15 crore. Apart from this, Shami is also fond of cars. His collection includes cars like Audi, BMW, Jaguar F-Type and Toyota Fortuner
Shami's personal life has also often been in the headlines. Recently, the Kolkata High Court ordered that he will have to pay Rs 1.5 lakh to his wife Hasin Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh to daughter Ayra every month.
