MI vs SRH : Why was Ryan Rickelton given not out even though he was caught?

Ryan Rickelton got a second lease of life during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (April 17) however he was dismissed by Pat Cummins in the 7th over of the match with Zeeshan Ansari taking the catch safely.

While SRH were celebrating their second wicket after the dismissal of Rohit Sharma following his quickfire 26, Ansari didn't overstep but the Hyderabad side suffered a major setback as the umpire declared the delivery a no-ball.

Varun Chakraborty questioned the no-ball rule

Varun Chakravarthy disagreed with the decision of the third umpire. He questioned the fairness of the rule and said that the bowler has not done anything wrong. Varun Chakravarthy said that bowlers should not be punished with no-balls and free hits.

What are the rules of MCC?

According to Law 27.4 of cricket, if the wicketkeeper changes his position before receiving the ball, the umpire has the authority to give a no-ball or wide.

According to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Law 27.3 states that: The wicketkeeper shall be fully behind the wicket at the striker's end from the moment the ball comes into play until the moment the ball bowled by the bowler touches the striker's bat or body or passes the wicket at the striker's end or the striker attempts to take a run.

It states, If the wicketkeeper violates this Rule, the umpire at the striker's end shall signal a no ball as soon as the ball is bowled.
