Neeraj Chopra, India's golden javelin thrower, delivered a stellar performance on Tuesday, securing his place in the final round at the Paris Olympics 2024. He did it in style, needing just his first attempt to surpass the automatic qualification mark of 84 meters. His throw of 89.34 meters demonstrates his exceptional talent and raises hopes for another potential Olympic medal.
This echoes his impressive Tokyo Olympics campaign, where he also qualified with his opening throw. Chopra holds the national record of 89.94 meters, set during the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.
Neeraj will face tough competition in the final, including Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who also qualified with a throw of 86.59 meters. Nadeem is a decorated athlete, having won silver at the World Championships and gold at the Commonwealth Games with a phenomenal throw exceeding 90 meters. This sets the stage for a highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan athletic rivalry.
Unfortunately, it wasn't all good news for India. Kishore Jena, competing in his first Olympics, fell short of qualifying for the final. His best throw of 80.73 meters placed him ninth in Group A, and with only four qualifiers from his group, he couldn't secure a spot among the top 12 across both groups.
Neeraj Chopra will compete in the final on August 8th at 11:55 PM IST. All eyes will be on him as he strives to add another Olympic gold to his collection.
