Joe Root's unstoppable form continues as the England batter chases the record for the most Test runs, aiming to surpass Sachin Tendulkar. On Saturday, Root scored his 34th Test century against Sri Lanka, overtaking Alastair Cook to become the Englishman with the most Test hundreds. This milestone came on the third day of the second Test of Sri Lanka's tour of England, leaving the Sri Lankan bowlers struggling.
This was Root’s second century of the match, following a brilliant 143 in the first innings. In both innings, he played a key role in rescuing England. In the second innings, despite England's strong position, they had lost a couple of early wickets when Root came to bat.

He built a crucial partnership with Harry Brook, stabilizing the innings. Later, he teamed up with Jamie Smith, putting the match out of Sri Lanka’s reach. Batting on 98, Root completed his century with a boundary off Lahiru Kumara.
England started Day 3 at 25/1, with openers Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope attacking the loose deliveries. However, Duckett was dismissed for 24, and Pope continued his poor form, scoring just 17.
Root and Brook then took charge, guiding England to a strong position. With Root’s century and key partnerships, England set a challenging target of 482 for Sri Lanka.
