Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began their 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with a crushing and one-sided defeat at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals (RR). CSK's batsmen were completely exposed by RR's formidable pace attack, and key players such as Sanju Samson and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad were soon back in the pavilion.

The bowlers failed to defend the low total, while Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued to showcase his brilliant form in 2026. Returning to their home ground, the 'Yellow Army' will look to turn their fortunes around in front of a packed stadium at Chennai's M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk).

On April 3, CSK will face the Punjab Kings (PBKS), who head into this contest following a narrow victory over the Gujarat Titans. PBKS will be hoping that their captain, Shreyas Iyer—who sustained a wrist injury in the previous match—will be fit to play. Meanwhile, all eyes will also be on the young Priyansh Arya, who delivered a stellar performance and scored a century against this very team last year.

Will MS Dhoni play in the CSK vs PBKS match of IPL 2026?

Former CSK captain and IPL legend MS Dhoni was unable to play in the opening match against RR. Dhoni had sustained a calf strain during a pre-season practice session at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium.

He is expected to remain sidelined for the first two to three weeks of the tournament. However, a ray of hope emerged for fans when Dhoni was spotted batting in the nets towards the end of CSK's practice session. Dhoni appeared to be in good form, striking the ball to various parts of the ground—including a signature 'no-look six.

This stalwart of Indian cricket is now 44 years old and plays professional cricket for only two months a year. There is a strong possibility that he will miss the CSK vs PBKS match as well, as the team management would not want to rush him back onto the field. In his absence, Sanju Samson will currently shoulder the wicketkeeping responsibilities.
