Ever since the Indian Premier League began in 2008, MS Dhoni has been one of the biggest faces of the tournament. As the league completes 18 years in 2026, Dhoni continues to be one of the few players who have been part of the IPL since its very first season.

Over the years, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter has achieved many milestones in the tournament. As captain, he led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to five IPL titles and built a legacy that is difficult to match. Among his many achievements, there is one remarkable record that could remain untouched for many years.

Most Dismissals by a Wicketkeeper in IPL

Dhoni holds the record for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in the IPL. From 2008 to 2025, he has played 278 matches and registered 201 dismissals behind the stumps.

His dismissals include:

  • 154 catches
  • 47 stumpings

With Dhoni still expected to play in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, this number could increase further. Considering the gap between him and other wicketkeepers, breaking this record looks extremely difficult in the current era.

Other Wicketkeepers Far Behind

Dinesh Karthik (2nd - Retired)

Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik is second on the list. However, Karthik has already retired from the IPL.

He finished his IPL career with 174 dismissals in 257 matches, including:

  • 137 catches
  • 37 stumpings

Wriddhiman Saha (3rd)

The third spot belongs to Wriddhiman Saha, who played 170 IPL matches between 2008 and 2024 and recorded 113 dismissals, consisting of:

  • 87 catches
  • 26 stumpings

Rishabh Pant (4th - Active)

At number four is Rishabh Pant, who has 101 dismissals in 125 matches, including:

  • 77 catches
  • 24 stumpings

Among active players, Pant appears to be the only wicketkeeper who could get close to Dhoni's record in the future. However, surpassing the legendary number still looks like a massive challenge.

Could IPL 2026 Be Dhoni's Final Season?

Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 but has continued to play in the IPL since then. Before almost every season, there is speculation that it could be his last appearance in the tournament, but he has continued to return.

This time, however, the discussion seems more serious. Dhoni has been dealing with knee problems for some time and has struggled physically during recent seasons.

Because of this, many believe that IPL 2026 might finally be Dhoni's last season in the tournament. If that happens, fans could be watching the legendary captain play his final games in the IPL.
