IPL 2025: Why was Sunil Narine not given out hit wicket?

High voltage drama was seen in the first match of IPL 2025 itself. This match was played between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens. During Kolkata's innings, the bat of Sunil Narine, who was opening, hit the stumps and the bails also fell, but despite the appeal of RCB players, he was not given a hit wicket.

There are fierce reactions on social media regarding this. Some people say that Narine was out and the umpire took the wrong decision, while some say that according to the rules, Narine was not out and the umpire took the right decision.

Why was Sunil Narine not given hit wicket?

According to the MCC's cricket rules, a batsman is out hit wicket when he or his bat hits the stumps while playing the ball or he or his bat hits the stumps while running to take a run, or he or his bat hits the stumps while hitting the ball a second time to prevent the ball from hitting the wicket. However, a batsman is not out hit wicket when his bat hits the stumps after playing a shot and after the delivery is completed. Since the ball had gone into the wicketkeeper's gloves and the delivery was completed and after that Narine's bat came in contact with the stumps, the umpires ruled it not out under Law 35.2. For example, sometimes the bails fall down due to the wicketkeeper or his own effort, then the batsman tries to pick up the bails and put them back. It is exactly like that.

KKR vs RCB Match Result

Rajat Patidar-led RCB won the toss and decided to bowl first. Josh Hazlewood gave India a great start by dismissing Quinton de Kock for just 4 runs in the very first over. However, the defending champions made a brilliant comeback thanks to captain Ajinkya Rahane's half-century in 25 balls and Narine's 44 off 26 balls.

After a brilliant performance by the bowlers led by Krunal Pandya and Josh Hazlewood, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won by seven wickets over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the opening match of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with 22 balls to spare. Despite captain Ajinkya Rahane's innings of 56 runs in 31 balls, KKR could only score 174 runs for eight wickets. RCB easily achieved the target by losing three wickets in 16.2 overs.
