IPL 2025 New and Old Rules Revealed: The 18th season of IPL (Indian Premier League 2025) is starting from 22 March 2025. The first match will be played between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens. There are only one days left for the tournament to start and the BCCI has increased the excitement of the game by implementing new rules. The BCCI has decided to implement the new rules after meeting the captains of all 10 teams on Thursday, 20 March.

All the new and returning rules in IPL 2025 that you should know

1. Second-ball rule

IPL 2025 will introduce a second-ball rule to deal with dew in night matches. Dew makes it difficult for bowlers to grip the ball, giving batsmen an advantage, especially during run chases. To deal with this problem, umpires will assess the condition of the ball after the 11th over of the second innings. If the dew is high, the bowling team will be allowed to use a new ball. However, this rule will not apply to afternoon matches.

2. Bowlers will be able to use saliva

Bowlers will be seen using saliva again in IPL 2025. The decision was taken after discussions with the captains of all 10 teams, most of whom supported it. The ban on saliva was imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teams will also be able to use the Decision Review System (DRS) to check high wide and balls outside the off stump. The use of Hawk-Eye technology and ball tracking will help umpires to make more accurate decisions.

Captains will no longer be banned due to slow-over rate in IPL 2025, they will be given demerit points. A demerit point system similar to the ICC model will be introduced. Captains will get demerit points depending on the severity of the violation and these points will remain in their record for three years. Ban will be imposed only in view of serious cases.
