England fast bowler Chris Woakes got injured while fielding on the first day of the ongoing fifth and final Test match against India at The Oval. He suffered a shoulder injury and had to leave the field. He did not return to the field till the end of the first day's play, which has increased the tension of the England team. Now fellow fast bowler Gus Atkinson has given an update on Chris Woakes' injury.
This incident happened on the first day of the fifth Test being played between India and England (IND vs ENG 5th Test). When on the fifth ball of the 57th over, Karun Nair drove Jamie Overton's ball towards long off. During that time Woakes (Chris Woakes Injury) ran at full speed and stopped the ball from going to the boundary and stopped Nair from taking three runs. However, while stopping the ball, Woakes fell to the ground in discomfort and immediately walked out of the field holding his shoulder.
Liam Dawson was brought in as a substitute fielder in his place.
Chris Woakes bowled a total of 14 overs on the first day of the game. Now giving an update on his injury in the press conference, fast bowler Gus Atkinson said, I don't have much information, but this injury looks serious. This is the last match of the series and it is unfortunate for a player to get injured at such a time. We are all hoping that it is not serious and he recovers soon.
Woakes took 1 wicket for 46 runs in 14 overs in the day's play, which was of KL Rahul. Now it remains to be seen whether he is fit for the rest of the day's play of the Test or not. Atkinson, who was included in the team in place of Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer, has impressed. He not only took two important wickets, but also ran out Shubman Gill with a direct hit.
India scored 204 runs for 6 wickets at stumps on the first day. Karun Nair and Washington Sundar shared an unbeaten partnership of 51 runs, which helped India recover from the initial setbacks. England will now be looking to wrap up India's innings soon.
