Joe Root scored his 38th Test century. He played an innings of 150 runs. During this memorable innings, Root shared a 144-run partnership with Ollie Pope (71) for the third wicket and a 142-run partnership with Ben Stokes. Root made many records in his name by hitting 14 fours during his brilliant 248-ball innings. As soon as he reached a personal score of 120, he surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting (13378) to become the second highest run scorer in Test cricket. Playing his 157th Test, 34-year-old Root surpassed Indian legend Rahul Dravid (13288 runs) and former South African great all-rounder Jacques Kallis (13289 runs) in terms of most Test runs in the first session of the day. He is now only behind India's greatest batsman Sachin Tendulkar (15921 runs).
Root, who made his Test debut against India in Nagpur in 2012, set another record by scoring his 12th century against this country. He surpassed Australia's Steve Smith's record of 11 Test centuries against India. This is the 38th century of Root's Test career. He has come in fourth place along with former Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara in the list of century makers in the longest format of the game. Ahead of him in this list are Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ponting (41). The effect of fatigue was clearly visible on the Indian bowlers. Bumrah (one wicket for 95 runs) was bowling at a speed of around 130, while Anshul Kamboj also failed to impress. Mohammad Siraj (one wicket for 113 runs) bowled vigorously, but luck did not favor him.
Apart from Root, Jack Crowley scored 84 runs, Ben Duckett scored 94 runs and Ollie Pope scored 71 runs. After the top four scored runs, the middle order faltered. Harry Brook was dismissed after scoring three runs and Jamie Smith after scoring nine runs. Chris Woakes could score only four runs. At present, captain Ben Stokes is unbeaten after scoring 77 runs and Liam Dawson is unbeaten after scoring 21 runs. The surprising thing is that England's number eight to 11 batsmen have more first class runs than India's top four batsmen. These include Dawson, Woakes, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer. Out of these, Dawson alone has scored more than 10,000 runs in first-class cricket.
