The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is all set for a team selection meeting on October 4 to choose the squad for the upcoming India vs Australia limited-overs series. One of the main topics of discussion will be the future of Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain.
Discussion on Rohit’s Future
Rohit Sharma has already retired from T20 and Test cricket. Now, the selectors want to talk to him personally about his future in 50-over cricket, both as a player and captain.
Rohit, who is 38 years old, will be 40 by the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. The selection committee will consider his age, workload, and long-term fitness before taking a decision.
Recently, Rohit cleared his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, proving that he is physically ready to play. However, BCCI might plan a gradual leadership transition while still keeping senior players like Virat Kohli in the team.
Possible Squad for Australia Series
Most of the players from India’s Champions Trophy 2025-winning team are expected to be part of the ODI squad against Australia. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will likely continue, while Shreyas Iyer could retain his spot in the middle order.

For the T20I squad, the selectors might bring back Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, who missed the Asia Cup 2025 team. Since bilateral series allow more than 15 players, both are likely to get opportunities.
Series Schedule
- First match: October 19, 2025
- Venue: Perth Stadium, Australia
- Matches: 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is
Australia has not yet announced its squad for the series.
The outcome of this meeting will be crucial for Team India’s future planning as the BCCI may decide whether Rohit Sharma will continue as India’s ODI captain till the 2027 World Cup.
