The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 concluded with India defeating New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling final held in Dubai. However, the closing ceremony was marred by controversy due to the absence of any representatives from the host nation, Pakistan. This unexpected situation has sparked significant debate and criticism, particularly from former Pakistan cricketers and fans
During the closing ceremony, no officials from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were present on stage to hand out medals or jackets. Instead, the presentation was conducted by BCCI President Roger Binny, Secretary Devajit Saikia, and ICC President Jay Shah. Jay Shah handed the trophy to Indian captain Rohit Sharma. This glaring absence was noticed immediately, especially given Pakistan's role as the official host of the tournament.
The ICC later clarified that only PCB office bearers were allowed on stage for the ceremony. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was reportedly unable to attend due to prior commitments as the Interior Minister of Pakistan. An ICC spokesperson explained, “Mr. Naqvi was unavailable and didn’t travel. As per understanding, only office bearers can be called for trophy presentation, so from PCB no office bearer was available for the same. And they (PCB) were the hosts, they should have been there.”
Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar was among those who questioned the absence of PCB officials. He expressed his disappointment and confusion, especially since Pakistan was the tournament's official host. PCB CEO Sumair Ahmed, who also served as the tournament director, was present at the venue but was not invited on stage. This was reportedly due to a communication error between him and ICC officials organizing the event.
The PCB is now expected to raise the issue with the ICC, questioning the lack of communication and representation at such a significant moment. This incident has added an awkward postscript to an otherwise successful tournament finale. The controversy has further strained relations between the ICC and the PCB, who are already unhappy with several other incidents during the tournament.
The absence of Pakistan representatives from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 closing ceremony has highlighted the importance of clear communication and coordination in major sporting events. While the ICC has provided an explanation, the PCB's dissatisfaction underscores the need for better management and representation in future tournaments. This controversy serves as a reminder that the success of a sporting event extends beyond the field of play and into the organizational aspects that support it.
