India's journey in the T20 World Cup semi-finals has been a mix of exhilarating victories and crushing defeats. They have reached the last-four stage five times, including the ongoing edition.
In the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, India faced Australia in the semi-finals. This match took place at Kingsmead, Durban. India, batting first, set a formidable total of 188/5 in their 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant 70 off 30 balls from Yuvraj Singh. The Indian bowlers, led by Sreesanth, then restricted Australia to 173/7 despite Matthew Hayden's 62 off 47 balls. India won by 15 runs and advanced to the final.

India's second semi-final appearance came seven years later at the T20 World Cup in 2014, held in Bangladesh. They played against South Africa at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. South Africa set a target of 173 runs. India’s chase was spearheaded by Virat Kohli, who scored an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls, leading India to victory with five balls to spare. This win secured India’s spot in the final.
In 2016, India reached the semi-finals for the third time and faced the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India batted first and posted a competitive total of 192/2, with Virat Kohli contributing significantly. However, the West Indies, led by Lendl Simmons’ 82 off 51 balls, chased down the target with ease, winning by 7 wickets and eliminating India from the tournament.
India's fourth semi-final appearance was in the 2022 T20 World Cup held in Australia. They faced England at the Adelaide Oval. India managed to score 168/6 in their innings. However, England’s openers, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales, put on a masterclass, chasing down the target without losing a wicket and winning by 10 wickets, thus knocking India out of the tournament.
India has now entered their fifth semi-final in the T20 World Cup history after defeating Australia in their last Super 8 match at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, on Monday, June 24.
