The International Paralympic Committee mentions: ‘Wheelchair tennis was established in 1976 following the work of former American freestyle skier Brad Parks. The sport gained popularity in the 1980s when France became the first country in Europe to introduce a specific programme for wheelchair tennis. The sport first made its appearance at the Barcelona 1992 Paralympics.’

The sport has the same rules as normal tennis, with some changes to take into account wheelchair use. Players are allowed to bounce the ball twice before returning it, and the sport features an impressive range of techniques and strategies that highlight the agility, precision and strength of players.
