Glenn Maxwell announces retirement from ODI cricket

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell on Monday announced his retirement from ODI cricket, bringing an end to his illustrious 13-year career for the national side in the 50-over format. Maxwell, 36, said he had made up his mind to retire from the format during Australia's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, exiting from the semi-finals after a loss to India in Dubai.

Glenn Maxwell, who made his international debut in ODIs for Australia in 2012, was part of the World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023. Maxwell revealed that during the Champions Trophy he spoke to Australia's selection committee chairman and former teammate George Bailey about his decision.

Glenn Maxwell ODI career

Glenn Maxwell made his debut against Afghanistan in 2012, playing 149 matches. He has scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and an incredibly high strike rate of 126.70, one of the best in ODI history. He scored four centuries, one of which was a double century, scoring an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, which is considered one of the greatest innings of all time.

He also took 77 wickets with his off-spin and was the best fielder of his time. Injuries have forced him to focus more on T20s since then. He has also expressed in an interview that he feels the body is no longer supporting him and it is time to let the youngsters take over.

The decision was taken keeping in mind the 2027 World Cup

Glenn Maxwell feels that in view of the 2027 World Cup, he will have to find another option in his place and work on it. He spoke to chairman George Bailey about this. He said, "We talked about the 2027 World Cup. I told him that I don't think I will be able to play the 2027 World Cup. I think now the time has come to look for other options in my place.

Work should be done with those who can play in his place for the 2027 World Cup. Maxwell said that he does not want to play any more series for his personal interest. Maxwell was playing for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, but was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. His personal performance was also not good, he scored only 48 runs in 6 innings.
