ECB banned Shakib Al Hasan: Bangladesh's star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is currently away from international cricket. He played his last match against India. Meanwhile, the England Cricket Board has given him a big blow.
The ECB has banned Shakib from bowling in all its competitions. An investigation conducted at Loughborough University found that the all-rounder's elbow bends more than 15 degrees, after which this decision has been taken by the England Board.
Shakib Al Hasan's action was questioned by the umpires while playing for Surrey during the County Championship in September 2024. He took 9 wickets in that match. Let us tell you, this was Shakib's first match in the County Championship since 2010-11.

To end the suspension, Shakib will have to undergo an Independent Reassessment of his action, which means that according to the rules, his elbow should bend less than 15 degrees while bowling. This is the first time in the all-rounder's 17-year career that his bowling action has been declared illegal.
The England Cricket Board issued an official statement saying: This suspension will come into effect from 10 December 2024, and will follow the process set out in the ECB's Regulations for reviewing bowlers reported with illegal bowling action. Shakib is ineligible to bowl in ECB competitions until he passes an independent re-evaluation of his bowling action.
Shakib Al Hasan had expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket during the home Test series against South Africa. But he was not part of the squad due to security reasons in the country. He has also not got a place in the Bangladesh team for the series against Afghanistan and West Indies. He also remained unsold in the IPL 2025 auction held in Jeddah in November. The all-rounder has taken 712 wickets in 447 matches for Bangladesh in a career spanning 17 years.
Shakib's ban is limited to ECB, but according to ICC's rule 11.3, this ban can go beyond ECB as well and can create problems for Shakib to play with other boards apart from international cricket. To start bowling again, Shakib will have to undergo a re-examination and get clearance from ECB.
Anyway, Shakib has been absent from international cricket since the Test series played on the India tour. He is not able to go to his country because there is a threat to his life, which has deepened after the coup in Bangladesh.
