Commonwealth Games 2022, Day 8: Bajrang Punia was a class apart while defending his title before Sakshi Malik produced a sensational gold medal-winning effort as Indian wrestlers grabbed six medals, including three gold, at the Commonwealth Games here on Friday.
Deepak Punia also contributed to swelling India’s medal tally by winning the men’s freestyle 86kg gold. Still, birthday girl Anshu Malik (57kg) had to be content with a silver medal in her maiden CWG appearance.
Divya Kakran clinched a bronze in 68kg, winning the play-off in 26 seconds against Tonga’s Tiger Lily. Mohit Grewal then ensured that India had a medal in all categories on Friday, winning the 125kg bronze play-off to cap a successful day in style.
Meanwhile, the Indian women’s hockey team had to endure heartbreak as they lost to Australia in a penalty shootout. They will now play New Zealand for the Bronze medal next.

Bajrang Punia and Deepak Punia faced no problems at all as they raced their way to the gold in their respective categories of Men’s 65 kg and 86 kg freestyle. Sakshi Malik played a tremendous game as she fought back from being 0-4 down to go 4-4 all and then win by pinfall against her Canadian opponent.

Anshu Malik fought hard but was too defensive at the start of the bout and changed her tactics in the last minute to bounce back which allowed Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye to counterattack. Her Nigerian opponent was dominant throughout the match and took the match by pinning and rolling Malik out of the ring.

Anshu Malik had scored a 10-0 win against Sri Lanka's Nethmi Poruthotage to move to the final.

India’s wrestlers are outstanding and this is clearly reflected in the CWG. Proud of @DivyaWrestler for winning a Bronze. This achievement will be cherished for generations to come. Best wishes for her future endeavors.
