The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 was called off due to heavy rain and strong winds at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Only 22 balls were bowled before the rain stopped the game. The officials waited for more than three hours, but the ground remained wet. Because of this, the umpires decided to abandon the match and both teams were given one point each.
KKR Struggle Continues Despite Opening Points Account
For Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the shared point helped them open their account in IPL 2026. However, their campaign still looks difficult. KKR had already lost their first two matches, and with just one point from three games, they are currently placed eighth on the points table.
Before the rain interruption, KKR were already in trouble. They had lost two wickets for just 25 runs, which put them under pressure early in the innings.
The team is also dealing with injuries to key players, which has made their start to the tournament even more challenging.
Punjab Kings Climb to the Top of the Points Table
Even though the rain denied them a clear victory, Punjab Kings (PBKS) benefited from the abandoned match. With five points, they moved to the top of the IPL 2026 points table.
Punjab had won their first two matches of the season and looked confident in this game as well. However, they have also played one more match than several other teams, which means the standings could change soon.
‘Kalbaishakhi’ Storm Plays Spoilsport in Kolkata
The sudden storm that disrupted the match is locally known as “Kalbaishakhi.” This type of storm is common in West Bengal during March and April. It usually arrives suddenly with strong winds, dark clouds, and heavy rainfall. Because of this unpredictable weather, several IPL matches at Eden Gardens have been affected in the past as well.
Xavier Bartlett Strikes Early Before Rain Arrives
Before the rain stopped play, Punjab Kings pacer Xavier Bartlett bowled brilliantly. He took two wickets for just 9 runs and put KKR on the back foot.
Bartlett dismissed Allen Finn and Cameron Green with sharp outswing deliveries. Both catches were taken by wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh.
