Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has provided a significant update on his fitness as he eyes a return to international cricket for the highly anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa in June. The talented cricketer is set to use an upcoming County stint in England to prepare for a potential comeback.
Green has been absent from competitive cricket since September last year due to a persistent back issue that required surgery. After months of rehabilitation, the 25-year-old has now fully recovered and is eager to make his return to the game.
Speaking to reporters in Perth on Monday, Green confirmed that he is now fit and ready to play as a batter. He revealed that he could have featured in the recent Sheffield Shield final for Western Australia had his team qualified.
“I’m going really well. I would have been ready for a Shield final if that happened ... I was raring to go for that, but it wasn’t meant to be,” Green said. “I’m pretty well and all fit and healthy.”
In an effort to regain his match fitness, Green will travel to England next week to play a five-match County stint with Gloucestershire. His first match for the team is expected to be against Kent at the Spitfire Ground in Canterbury, starting on April 18.
This stint will be crucial in helping Green prepare for the WTC Final. Although he has not yet been guaranteed a spot in Australia’s playing XI, he remains hopeful of securing a place in the top six batting order.
“We’ve obviously got an ultra-successful top five, six, seven, so it’s never easy, but that’s what you want it to be in a Test team,” Green stated. “You want guys to challenge, take that position for themselves, and that’s what’s been done.”
Australia’s Test side has been performing exceptionally well, making it challenging for Green to reclaim his spot. However, he remains optimistic about his chances and is focused on proving his readiness through strong performances in County cricket.
“I think they’ve had another ultra-successful summer and I was so happy watching, but at the same time, you want to get back in the team, so we will just wait to see what happens,” he added.
Green is not the only Australian cricketer making a comeback. Veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon has also confirmed his fitness ahead of the WTC Final. Lyon had been dealing with a hip complaint during a recent series against India and Sri Lanka but is now fully fit and ready to contribute to Australia’s title defense.
With both Green and Lyon back in the mix, Australia will be aiming to secure their second consecutive WTC mace in what promises to be an exciting showdown against South Africa at Lord’s in June.
