In a devastating turn of events, Indian wrestling sensation Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics. The two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist was unable to make weight for the final of the 50kg category.
Despite reaching the final after defeating the world number one and securing two more impressive victories, Phogat's Olympic journey came to an abrupt end. She had gained weight the previous day but was unable to maintain the required weight for the second day of competition.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class,” the IOA said in a statement. “Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”
Desperate to make the cut, Phogat reportedly went through rigorous weight loss measures, including sleepless nights and intense physical exertion. However, she fell short by a mere 100 grams. The Indian team made a last-ditch effort to secure extra time for Phogat but was unsuccessful.
This is not the first time the wrestler has faced challenges with weight management in the 50kg category. Having previously competed in the 53kg division, Phogat has struggled to meet the stricter weight requirements.
Phogat's disqualification is a heart-wrenching blow for Indian wrestling and the athlete herself.
