BCB gets legal notice to ban Shakib Al Hasan from all forms

In a formal appeal to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the attorneys of Rafiqul Islam, the father of garment factory worker Rubel, who was slain on August 5 in Dhaka's Adabor, have demanded that Shakib Al Hasan be immediately removed from all cricket-related activities. During the riots in Bangladesh earlier this month that led to Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina's removal, the former captain of Bangladesh was named in a Federal Investigation Report (FIR) along with 146 other people. Shakib's future will be determined after the first Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Shakib will be decided upon after the conclusion of the Test match, which is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, according to BCB president Faruque Ahmed.

Shakib Al Hasan must be removed from all cricket-related activities immediately, according to a legal notice delivered to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) via registered mail and email. The letter was served by advocate Md Rafinur Rahman, who is representing attorney Shajib Mahmood Alam.

This notice further asks that Shakib be brought back to Bangladesh to assist with the investigation into the murder case and to notify the International Criminal Court of this development. Following a meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium with the board directors, BCB President Faruque confessed that they had not yet received the notification. He did, however, guarantee that Shakib's participation will be decided before the second Test match against Pakistan, which is scheduled for Rawalpindi on August 30.

BCB's Decision on Shakib and the South Africa Series

BCB President Faruque Ahmed has acknowledged receiving the legal notice but emphasized that a decision on Shakib’s future will only be made after the ongoing Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi concludes. As of now, Shakib remains an active player in the Test series, but his position hangs in the balance, with the BCB set to deliberate further before the second Test match scheduled for August 30.

Faruque addressed the media following a meeting with board directors at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, stating that while they have not yet received the legal notice, the matter will be reviewed in detail once the Test match concludes. He pointed out that the FIR is merely the initial stage of the legal process, and any decision regarding Shakib will be taken with careful consideration of the facts and the legal notice once received.

In a related development, Faruque also discussed the upcoming home series against South Africa, expressing confidence that the political unrest in Bangladesh will not hinder the bilateral series. While the ICC has relocated the Women's T20 World Cup to the UAE due to security concerns, Faruque believes that hosting South Africa for a two-match Test series will not pose significant challenges. He noted that logistical and security arrangements for bilateral series are generally more manageable compared to global events, and there are currently no travel restrictions for South Africa.
