AUS vs ENG 4th Ashes Test Pitch Report: Australian captain Steve Smith said after the final training session that the selectors wanted to take another close look at the pitch before deciding on the final XI. Smith described the pitch as bouncy and said there was about 10mm of grass on it. This means the fast bowlers are certain to get assistance. With rain expected on the first day, the moisture will further benefit the fast bowlers.

Smith said, "I had a few bad days leading up to the Adelaide Test and things weren't great before this match either. But I'm feeling good now. It was a shame not to play the Adelaide Test, and it was a fantastic pitch for batting. I was watching the match from the hotel and wished I was playing. But it was the right decision not to play because I was struggling."

The MCG pitch for the 2025 Boxing Day Test is expected to be a high-quality, balanced surface, continuing the venue's recent trend of being one of Australia's most improved cricket wickets. Expect a "green tinge" and moisture on day one. With an unusually cool forecast (up to 17°C), the ball is likely to swing and seam in the first two sessions. Traditionally, the MCG pitch flattens out on days two and three. As the initial moisture evaporates, it becomes an excellent surface for stroke play, favoring set batsmen.
