FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — It was a comfortable night for Lionel Messi and Argentina at Chase Stadium. Messi didn’t score but provided two assists as Argentina cruised to a 6-0 win over Puerto Rico in an international friendly on Tuesday, October 14.
Messi played the full match, creating several opportunities and contributing to two of Argentina’s goals. Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister scored twice in the 14th and 36th minutes, while Lautaro Martinez added two more in the 79th and 84th minutes. Gonzalo Montiel (23’) and an own goal by Puerto Rico’s Steven Echevarria completed the rout.
The match was relocated from Chicago’s Soldier Field to Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium, giving Messi another chance to perform in front of his Florida fans. Tickets started around $33 before kickoff.
Lautaro Martinez added another in the 83rd minute from a beautiful assist by Messi inside the box.
Martinez netted another goal in front of the net, making it an easy finish for Argentina.
Puerto Rico’s Steven Echevarria accidentally deflected a shot into his own net, giving Argentina a comfortable four-goal cushion.
Argentina dominated the first half with Mac Allister scoring twice and Montiel adding one on a Messi assist. The World Cup champions looked in complete control.
Mac Allister netted his second goal off a pass from Flaco López in the 37th minute.
Messi set up Gonzalo Montiel beautifully in the 23rd minute, and Montiel fired home to double Argentina’s lead.
Mac Allister headed home in the 14th minute after Messi’s shot rebounded off the crossbar.
In the 8th minute, Argentina goalkeeper Dibu Martinez made a crucial save on a long-range shot from Leandro Antonetti.
The match was initially scheduled for Chicago’s Soldier Field on October 13 but was relocated by promoter VMG Sports. Argentine media cited ongoing ICE protests, while Chicago Park District spokesman Luca Serra explained:
“The promoter made the decision this morning due to low ticket sales.”
Messi opted out of Argentina’s match against Venezuela at Hard Rock Stadium on October 10 to play for Inter Miami in their 4-0 win over Atlanta United on October 11, where he scored twice and assisted once. This performance brought his MLS tally to 26 goals and 18 assists.
He is expected to rejoin Inter Miami for their final regular-season game against Nashville SC on October 18. Inter Miami currently trails Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference standings.
Messi’s last appearance for Argentina was on September 4 in a 3-0 win against Venezuela in Buenos Aires, a match he treated as potentially his last on home soil due to Argentina’s schedule.
“Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But well, we’re almost there so I’m excited and motivated to play it,”
Messi said after his September performance. He added:
“Match by match, I’ll finish the season, then I’ll have preseason, and there will be six months left. So, we’ll see how I feel.”
