West Indies attacking all-rounder Andre Russell is not only a dream T20 player, but also one of the most sought-after talents in franchise T20 cricket worldwide. Over the past few years, Russell has proven himself a game-changer on numerous occasions with his impressive batting and bowling performances. Here's a look at some of the most dangerous innings Andre Russell has played in the IPL.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1988, Russell made his first-class debut at the age of 19. He joined the West Indies A team in a 50-over game against Ireland in June 2010. In that game, he scored 61 runs off 34 balls and took 6 wickets off 42 balls. This performance earned him a place in the West Indies' 2011 World Cup squad. He made his ODI debut against Ireland in Mohali during the 2011 World Cup and has played 56 matches to date, scoring 1,034 runs and taking 70 wickets.
Russell has been a new face in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has established himself as one of the best IPL all-rounders of all time. Russell made his IPL debut with the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in the 2012 season. He was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014, and since then, Russell has shown his true potential in the purple and gold jersey.
In the 8th season of the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings XI, batting first, scored 155/7 in their allotted 20 overs. In response, Punjab's bowlers restricted KKR to 60/5 in 7.5 overs. While Yusuf Pathan was trying to chase this total, Russell came in and scored 66 runs in 36 balls, hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes. Although he was dismissed in the 18th over, KKR won the match by four wickets.
In the 9th edition of the IPL, KKR faced Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The Bangalore franchise batted first and posted a total of 185/7. Chasing the difficult target, KKR's top order collapsed to 69/4 in 10.1 overs. However, Yusuf, along with Russell, brought KKR back into the match. Russell played a quickfire knock of 39 runs off 24 balls, his innings including four sixes and a four, destroying the opposition bowling unit. His timely innings helped KKR win the match by five wickets.
After missing the 2017 season, Russell made a stunning comeback in the IPL against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Russell came on to bat at the end of the 10th over and stunned the Chepauk crowd with a brilliant 88 off just 36 balls. His brilliant innings, which included 1 four and 11 huge sixes, completely changed the course of the innings. However, CSK won the match by five wickets.
Batting at number three in IPL 2019, Russell scored 80 runs in 40 balls with the help of six fours and eight sixes, helping KKR post a mammoth total of 232/2 in the first innings. Later in the match, he took two wickets for just 25 runs and took two catches, single-handedly helping the Kolkata franchise win by 34 runs and ending a six-match losing streak.
After a poor IPL season in 2020, Russell took his first T20 five-wicket haul in Chennai, helping KKR dismiss Mumbai Indians (MI) for 152. This spell was special because it took just 12 balls to take five wickets against defending champions MI. Chasing a modest total, KKR lost by 10 runs.
