Afghanistan to Host Sri Lanka: A new dawn is about to dawn for Afghanistan cricket. After demonstrating its prowess on the field, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is now poised to achieve a major milestone. Afghanistan is all set to host Sri Lanka for the first time. This series will prove to be a milestone not only in terms of sport but also in the cricketing relations between the two countries.

This bilateral series will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from March 13 to March 25. A total of 6 matches will be played during this period, including 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs.

  • T20I Series (Sharjah Cricket Stadium): March 13, 15, and 17.
  • ODI Series (Dubai International Cricket Stadium): March 20, 22, and 25.

This will be the second bilateral T20I series between the two countries. The last time these two teams faced each other in this format was in February 2024. Both teams have a long history in ODI cricket; Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have clashed three times in ODI series between 2022 and 2024.

ACB CEO Naseeb Khan described the occasion as "historic," saying the series would strengthen the relationship between the two boards. He expressed hope that given the recent form, fans would get to see high-quality cricket. According to Naseeb Khan, the main objective of this series is to prepare the team for upcoming ICC and ACC tournaments.

Interestingly, this series begins just five days after the conclusion of the Men's T20 World Cup. While Sri Lanka reached the Super Eight in the World Cup, Afghanistan's journey ended early. Now, both teams will be looking to put those victories and defeats behind them and make a fresh start.

Impact of IPL and PSL 2026 on the Series

This series is being held amid a very busy cricket calendar. The last match of the ODI series will be played on March 25th, and the IPL and PSL will begin the following day, i.e., March 26th.

As a result, many star players like Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed (Afghanistan) and Dasun Shanaka, Kusal Perera (Sri Lanka) will leave directly to join their respective franchise teams after completing their national duty.
