5 players who suffered horrific injuries on the cricket field

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer suffered a bizarre rib injury during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday. The incident occurred when Iyer took a brilliant catch off Alex Carey, but in the process, he injured his left rib, causing a serious injury and being admitted to the ICU. Scans later revealed Iyer had suffered a spleen injury, and he underwent immediate surgery. The batsman is now out of danger. His left spleen has ruptured, and he may be out of action for a significant period.

1. Phillip Hughes (neck injury - resulting in death)

One of the most famous incidents on the cricket field involved the late Australian cricketer Phil Hughes. During a Sheffield Shield match, a ball from Sean Abbott struck Hughes in the neck. This severed his vertebral artery, ultimately causing a brain hemorrhage, and the Australian player died a few days later.

2. Raman Lamba (head injury resulting in death)

Indian cricketer Raman Lamba was fielding at short leg in a league match in Dhaka, but surprisingly, he wasn't wearing a helmet for protection. The batsman struck him hard on the head, narrowly missing the fielder. Lamba already suffered internal injuries and died three days later from internal bleeding.

3. Jason Gillespie (broken leg)

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie is known for his brilliant bowling, swing, and passion for cricket. But there's one incident in his career that no cricket fan can forget—he broke his leg during a match against Sri Lanka in 2002. During a Test match against Sri Lanka, Gillespie ran to take a catch and collided with Steve Waugh. Gillespie broke his leg and was carried off on a stretcher, while Waugh broke his nose in a freak accident on the field.

4. Mark Boucher (eye injury)

In a practice match against Somerset, South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher suffered an eye injury when the bails struck him. He was standing at the wicket while Imran Tahir was bowling, and this caused serious damage to his eye. His retina remained intact, but his pupil and iris were damaged, forcing him to retire from all forms of cricket.

5. Nari Contractor (Broken Skull)

A bouncer from West Indies fast bowler Charlie Griffith struck the fearless Indian opener on the head. The batsman suffered a skull fracture and fell into a coma, with some of his teammates even donating blood to save his life.
