Preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup have already begun. The ICC has devised a comprehensive plan to make this tournament even grander than its predecessors. Although the tournament is still a year away, fans are already demonstrating tremendous enthusiasm and excitement for it. Meanwhile, the ICC has formulated a strategy designed to ensure that the upcoming World Cup surpasses even the 2023 edition in magnificence. In other words, it is highly probable that the next World Cup will be even more spectacular.

The hosting rights for the 2027 ODI World Cup have been awarded to three nations this time around. In addition to South Africa and Zimbabwe, Namibia has also been entrusted with hosting responsibilities. This marks the first instance in which the ICC has granted World Cup hosting rights to an Associate nation. However, the Namibian team itself has not yet qualified for the World Cup. The upcoming tournament is scheduled to take place between October and November.

The ICC has not yet released the official schedule for the tournament. It is expected that the schedule will be announced once the participating teams have been finalized. A significant highlight is that the ODI World Cup is returning to the African continent after a long hiatus of nearly 24 years. Previously, the World Cup was held in South Africa in 2003; now, the opportunity has arisen once again.

How many matches will be played in the 2027 World Cup?

The ICC has undertaken extensive preparations to make the upcoming World Cup even more spectacular. During the previous World Cup held in 2023, a total of 48 matches were played throughout the tournament; however, for the next edition scheduled for 2027, a total of 54 matches are planned. This expansion is taking place because 14 teams are participating this time, and the format utilized in the 2003 edition is also making a comeback. Consequently, the World Cup will not only be on a grander scale but is also set to prove more thrilling than ever before. While only 10 teams competed in the 2023 World Cup, that number has now been increased for the upcoming tournament.

2027 World Cup Format

The format introduced by the ICC for the 2003 ODI World Cup proved to be highly effective; it offered teams more opportunities to win the title, and for this very reason, the format is now making a comeback. In 2003, 14 teams participated in the tournament. These teams were divided into two groups, with seven teams in each group. The top three teams from each group advanced to the Super 6 stage. A distinctive feature of this format is that teams carry forward the points earned from their victories in the league stage into the subsequent round. However, only the points secured against teams that also qualify for the Super 6 stage will be added to their total tally; points earned against teams that are eliminated in the first round will not be carried forward.

2027 ODI World Cup Hosting

Although the World Cup is being co-hosted by three countries, the majority of the matches will be played in South Africa. Out of a total of 54 matches, 44 will take place in South Africa. Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban have been selected as the venues for these matches. The remaining ten matches will be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia. In the 2003 World Cup, Team India reached the final but ultimately suffered a defeat at the hands of Australia. This time, it will be interesting to see how the 14 teams participating in the tournament perform.
