IPL 2025 Retention: On October 1, 2024, all the 10 IPL franchises released the names of the retained players ahead of the mega auction. Many players like Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Travis Head and Sunil Narine have been retained. However, some big names like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer have been released. Three players have been retained for an amount of more than Rs 20 crore. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been retained by Mumbai Indians for Rs 18 crore. Three other senior players like Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav have been retained at a lower price than Bumrah. Bumrah is arguably the best fast bowler in the world and is an asset for any team he plays for. He took 20 wickets last season. However, MI finished last.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been retained for Rs 18 crore for IPL 2025, which is the most expensive retention for the team. This is equal to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Gaikwad captained CSK for the first time last season. The team failed to reach the playoffs.

Pat Cummins has taken a pay cut. He was bought by SRH for Rs 20.5 crore in the IPL 2024 auction, but has now been retained for Rs 18 crore for IPL 2025. Cummins was made the captain for the first time in the IPL and he led SRH to the IPL final for the first time since 2018. However, they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders. Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been retained for Rs 18 crore for IPL 2025. His salary is an increase of Rs 4 crore compared to the previous season. Samson captained RR last season and led the team to the playoffs. He scored 531 runs at a strike rate of 153, including five half-centuries.

Lucknow Supergiants have released KL Rahul and retained West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran for Rs 21 crore. Pooran is the joint second most expensive player to be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Pooran can also captain LSG next season. In IPL 2024, the left-handed batsman scored 499 runs at a strike rate of 178.

RCB's biggest star and IPL's top run-scorer Virat Kohli has been retained for Rs 21 crore for IPL 2025. There are also reports that Kohli can captain RCB in 2025. The team has released Faf du Plessis. Kohli won the Orange Cap in IPL 2024 by scoring 741 runs with one century and five half-centuries.

Sunrisers have retained Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 crore, which is the most expensive retention ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The South African power-hitter has proven to be one of the most destructive middle-order batsmen in the world over the years. In IPL 2024, Klaasen scored 479 runs at a strike rate of 171 and hit four half-centuries.
