World Environment Day 2025 Theme: Every 5th of June is celebrated as World Environment Day all over the world. The purpose of celebrating World Environment Day is to make people aware and conscious about the protection of the environment.
Human life is not possible without nature. In such a situation, it is very important that we understand the importance of trees, plants, forests, rivers, lakes, land, mountains. The decision to celebrate this day was taken after discussion in the World Environment Conference organized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. After this, the first World Environment Day was celebrated on 5 June 1974. On the occasion of World Environment Day, many types of programs are organized in various schools to make children aware about the protection of the environment.
World Environment Day 2025 Theme
Every year World Environment Day has a special theme. This year's theme is - 'Putting an End to Plastic Pollution'. In view of this theme, many programs are being held in the country on environmental alternatives to banned single-use plastic and plastic waste management. Last year the theme of Environment Day was based on tackling the problem of desertification and drought. In 2023 too the theme was based on solutions to plastic pollution.
The environment is getting polluted due to indiscriminate cutting of trees and increasing pollution. Global warming is increasing. Bad air is suffocating people. Many people in cities are suffering from respiratory, heart and lung diseases due to bad environment. We should understand that the existence of the whole humanity is dependent on nature. Therefore, the imagination of human society is incomplete without a healthy and safe environment. Human life is possible only on planet Earth, so it is our responsibility to keep it livable. Plastic pollution makes the three threats facing our planet even bigger - climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution. Every year 11 million tons of plastic waste contaminates the water ecosystem.
History of World Environment Day
World Environment Day was first initiated in 1972 during the Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, which marked the beginning of global environmental consciousness. The first celebration took place in 1973 and since then June 5 has become a cornerstone for environmental action.
Each year, UNEP appoints a different country to host the event and highlights a key environmental theme. Previous years have focused on climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem restoration. The annual event now engages more than 150 countries and millions of people through tree-planting drives, clean-up drives, sustainability workshops and policy-level dialogues.
