In a shocking twist to the ongoing gang wars, Delhi Police foiled a murder plot against popular comedian Munawar Faruqui. Two alleged shooters from the Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar-Virender Charan gang were arrested after a gunfight on Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj Road, Delhi, on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Rahul from Panipat and Sahil from Bhiwani, Haryana, reportedly confessed they were sent to kill Faruqui on orders from gangsters Godara and Brar, who are currently abroad. Police sources revealed the comedian was targeted over his past controversial jokes on Hindu gods.
Investigations show the shooters had conducted multiple recce in Mumbai and Bengaluru, even attempting an attack earlier this year. Their Bengaluru plan failed when Faruqui unexpectedly switched cars, thwarting their move.
Rahul, one of the arrested shooters, sustained a bullet injury during the encounter and was wanted for a triple murder case in Yamunanagar (Dec 2024). Police also seized firearms and a motorcycle used by the duo.
At 33, Munawar Faruqui is one of India’s most talked-about stand-up comics. With 14.2 million Instagram followers and a victory in Bigg Boss 2024, his popularity has skyrocketed despite controversies. In the past, he faced arrests, once in 2021 under hate speech charges in Madhya Pradesh, and again in 2024 during a Mumbai hookah bar raid.
While Faruqui has often been caught in the storm of public debates, this chilling murder plot adds a new layer of concern around the intersection of entertainment, free speech, and crime syndicates in India.
