Digital arrest has been a matter of concern for many times. In such a situation, today we will tell you in this article what is digital arrest and why PM Modi has expressed his concern about it.

What is digital arrest?

Digital arrest is a new method of cyber fraud in which fraudsters call the victim by posing as police, CBI, ED, Customs, Income Tax or Narcotics officers and then accuse them or their close ones of being involved in some illegal activities. The scammers then demand an immediate video call to settle the matter and threaten to arrest them over the call or video call.

The victim is then intimidated over video calls with fake identity cards or court documents and is pressured to pay a 'fine' to avoid "arrest".

How accurate is digital arrest?

If you have understood about digital arrest, then let us tell you that there is no such thing as digital arrest. In fact, these threats are completely fake. Its purpose is only to extort money from the victim as soon as possible and hence by claiming to be police etc., scammers try to extort money from people by scaring them in this way.

In view of the increasing cases of cyber crime and digital arrest in the country, the Home Ministry is constantly advising people to be alert and cautious. In this sequence, Cyber Dost, the cyber security awareness branch of the Home Ministry, is constantly making people aware against digital arrest through its posts. By sharing a post on the social media platform X, Cyber Dost said that digital arrest is just a scam and no legal officer ever arrests on a call or video call.

How to protect yourself from digital arrest

  • Scammers create such situations to intimidate victims, which people easily believe. In such a situation, take some time to think calmly before reacting immediately.
  • If someone claims to be from a law enforcement agency, do not make their video call or transfer any money amount to them. Investigate them thoroughly and also check the official source.
  • Do not share any sensitive personal or financial status related information over phone or video call. Especially avoid doing so with any unknown number.
  • Genuine and legal government agencies will not use platforms like WhatsApp or Skype for any kind of official conversation or arrest. So be careful when you get such calls.
  • If you get a suspicious call, immediately report it to your local police or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in).
