At 9 p.m. Sunday, two cocktail explosions occurred in front of the Central Road residence of Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. At 9:30 p.m., a cocktail explosion occurred in the Bangla Motor area. Two cocktail explosions also occurred in front of Titumir College and Amtali Chowk in Dhaka. A bus also caught fire during the incident.
What are the charges against Sheikh Hasina?
- Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been charged at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The first charge alleges her involvement in the forced disappearances of opposition leaders.
- The second charge alleges that Sheikh Hasina was involved in killings during the violence. The investigation report, released on May 12, 2025, also claims that Sheikh Hasina ordered the killings, which further fueled the violence. During this period, 1,400 people, including women and children, were killed and approximately 25,000 were injured.
- Sheikh Hasina, along with accused Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Chowdhury Abdullah Ali, are accused of conspiring to murder Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, without provocation.
- The former Prime Minister is also accused of killing six people on Dhaka's Chankhar Bridge.
- Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam says Sheikh Hasina faces five counts of murder, involving 13 people. Before leaving Dhaka, five people were shot dead and their bodies were burnt in Ashulia and one person was burnt alive.
What punishment is being sought for Sheikh Hasina?
Due to these murder cases, the interim government of Bangladesh revoked Sheikh Hasina's passport. There are also calls for the death penalty for Sheikh Hasina. The proceedings against Sheikh Hasina were broadcast live on television. The ongoing debate in the Interim Inquiry Commission concluded on October 23rd, after which the Interim Inquiry Commission will deliver its verdict today, November 17th.
