In a major political development ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, the Election Commission of India has officially allotted the whistle symbol to actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, widely known as TVK. The decision marks a crucial milestone for the debutant political outfit as it prepares to make its electoral entry in one of India’s most politically vibrant states.
The announcement came on Thursday, January 22, 2026, confirming TVK’s recognition with a distinct election symbol under the Election Symbols Reservation and Allotment Order, 1968. For a new political party, the allotment of a symbol is not just a procedural step, but a powerful identity marker that connects directly with voters on the ground.
The whistle symbol carries strong visual recall and cultural familiarity, especially in Tamil Nadu, where it is often associated with attention, alertness, and rallying calls. For TVK, led by one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, the whistle symbol aligns naturally with Vijay’s mass appeal and grassroots connect.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam approached the Election Commission of India on November 11 last year, formally requesting the allotment of an election symbol. As per ECI guidelines, the party submitted a list of ten symbols for consideration. This included seven symbols from the list of free symbols notified by the Commission and three symbols that were self-designed by the party.
After careful evaluation, the ECI approved the whistle as TVK’s official symbol for the upcoming Assembly elections. The move legally enables the party to contest polls under a unified and recognisable banner across constituencies in Tamil Nadu.
Alongside TVK’s announcement, the Election Commission also confirmed the election symbol for Kamal Haasan-led Makkal Needhi Maiam. The MNM has been allotted the battery torch symbol, continuing with the same identity it used in previous elections.
MNM had contested both the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections using the battery torch symbol. By retaining it, the party ensures continuity and recall among its existing voter base.
The allotment of symbols to TVK and MNM signals a sharpening of the political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. With popular film personalities like Vijay and Kamal Haasan playing active political roles, voter interest is expected to intensify, especially among youth and urban voters.
