UP Voter List Deletion After SIR: The political landscape of Uttar Pradesh is currently swirling with controversy over voter lists. Following the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the data on voter deletions has sent shockwaves through all political parties. Surprisingly, data analysis suggests that voter lists have seen larger reductions in areas where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won, compared to Samajwadi Party (SP) strongholds. The question is: will this have a direct impact on the 2027 assembly elections?

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the SP returned as the largest party in Uttar Pradesh, winning 37 seats, while the BJP was reduced to 33. Now, the district-wise voter deletion data indicates that the rate of deletions in BJP-held seats has reached 20% to 30%, which is higher than in SP-held areas.

In many districts where the BJP won, the percentage of vote cut was higher than in areas where the SP won.

District/Lok Sabha seat Deduction (%)
Lucknow30.04%
Ghaziabad28.83%
Kanpur Nagar25.50%
Meerut24.65%
Prayagraj (Phoolpur)24.64%
Gautam Buddha Nagar23.98%
Agra23.25%
Bahraich20.44%
Varanasi18.18%

Why could the BJP's chances increase?

Looking at the data, the rate of deletions is quite high in urban areas and in western UP (Meerut, Ghaziabad, Noida), considered a strong BJP stronghold. The deletion of 30% of names in a city like Lucknow raises serious questions. If this trend continues, the BJP may face a major challenge in bringing its traditional urban vote bank to the polling booths in 2027.
