Trump New H-1B Rules: Steep Fee Increase and Its Ramifications for Global Talent

US President Donald Trump has once again taken a step that has caused an international uproar. This will directly impact Indians living in the US. On Friday, President Trump signed a proclamation that will increase the H1B visa fee to US$100,000 annually. This move will target Indian IT companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCL Tech, and others in the coming days. Trump has increased the H1B visa fee from $1,000 to $100,000.

Surprising Move: White House Staff Secretary Will Sharp stated that the H1B non-immigrant visa program is one of the "most abused" visas in the country's current immigration system. He said that it allows highly-skilled professionals to come to the US to work in fields where Americans are not employed.

The Trump administration said the $100,000 fee was imposed to ensure that people being brought into the country are "truly highly skilled" and not replacing American workers. The move is intended to protect American workers and ensure that companies have a clear path to bring and hire "truly exceptional people" to the US.

What impact will this have on Indians?

'We need workers, we need excellent workers, and this will ensure that happens,' Trump said while signing the proclamation in the Oval Office in the presence of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Lutnick explained that the employment-based green card program admits 281,000 people annually, with an average annual income of $66,000. Furthermore, they are five times more likely to be eligible for government assistance programs. He said, 'So we were hiring below the average American, the bottom quartile. That was illogical, the only country in the world hiring the bottom quartile.'

Lutnick said, "We will stop doing that. We will hire only exceptional people at the top, not those who are trying to take jobs away from Americans. They will start businesses and create jobs for Americans." And this program will raise over US$100 billion for the US Treasury.'

Trump said the country would use the money to cut taxes and pay down debt. 'We think it will be very successful,' he said. Lutnick said the fee would be US$100,000 annually. This move would significantly impact Indian workers employed in IT companies and other companies on H1B visas. These visas are valid for three years and can be renewed for another three years.
