Tensions in West Asia: Strait of Hormuz Blocked, Iran-US Conflict Escalates Tensions: Amidst the conflict involving Iran, the global energy crisis is deepening, and alternative solutions are being sought. Currently, there are no indications suggesting that the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran will subside anytime soon. Meanwhile, addressing the Lok Sabha on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi provided details regarding India's stance and the measures undertaken by the government in light of the prevailing tensions in the Middle East.
Major Impact on the Global Economy—
Describing the tensions in West Asia as grave, Prime Minister Modi stated that this conflict has had a profound impact on the global economy, affecting people's livelihoods—an impact that will be felt for a long time to come. He noted that the region where this conflict is unfolding serves as a crucial trade route for India. Therefore, the safety and security of Indians residing in the conflict-affected areas are paramount, and the Central Government is taking all necessary measures with the utmost vigilance.
Providing detailed information regarding the supply situation of crude oil, LPG, and LNG in India, he explained that the government is making continuous efforts to maintain supply lines. He further added that this conflict has now been ongoing for over three weeks, and the entire world is appealing to all parties involved to restore peace.
Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz; Measures Taken—
The Prime Minister also pointed out that since the onset of the conflict, the movement of goods through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted, thereby increasing pressure on energy supplies. However, the government has implemented measures designed to significantly mitigate the impact on petrol and gas supplies. Citing the blending of ethanol in petrol as a major achievement, he stated that this initiative results in an annual saving of approximately 45 million barrels of oil.
He further noted that India meets nearly 60 percent of its LPG requirements through imports. Given the prevailing atmosphere of uncertainty, the government is prioritizing domestic gas production; furthermore, LPG production is being rapidly ramped up to ensure that supplies continue without any interruption.
