Actor Shahana Goswami’s film Santosh is steadily making waves on the global stage, moving closer to earning a nomination in the International Feature Film category at the prestigious 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Sandhya Suri, Santosh has been shortlisted, marking a proud moment not only for the cast and crew but also for cinema enthusiasts worldwide.
In a recent interaction, Shahana Goswami, who plays a determined police officer in the film, expressed her joy and pride at this milestone. Sharing her thoughts with Hindustan Times, she said, 'This is a cause for celebration not just for me, but also for Sandhya Suri and the entire team involved.' The actress believes that the recognition extends beyond borders, celebrating the collaborative effort that brought Santosh to life.
Santosh is an international co-production involving the United Kingdom, India, Germany, and France. Despite being the United Kingdom's official submission to the Oscars, Shahana firmly believes India has every reason to take pride in the achievement. 'I don’t believe in the segregation of ‘this is mine and that is yours,’ Shahana emphasized. 'There is a huge Indian team involved. India has every reason to be proud of it as well. I don’t think it is a country-specific thing.'
Highlighting the thematic essence of the film, Shahana pointed out that Santosh transcends borders and focuses on storytelling, diversity, and human emotions. The roots of the narrative are undeniably Indian, making it resonate universally, regardless of which country officially submitted the film.
The path to the Oscars is never easy, and Santosh faces tough competition as it vies with 14 other shortlisted films for the final nomination. Shahana remains optimistic yet composed about the outcome. 'I am hopeful that the film receives the nomination it deserves. However, I am also at peace with any result,' she said, reflecting her calm yet confident outlook. She added that her intuition gives her a sense of hope for Santosh's chances at the Oscars.
While Santosh progresses toward Oscar glory, India’s official entry to the Academy Awards, Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, unfortunately, did not make it to the shortlist. Despite this setback, the buzz around Santosh highlights the strength and potential of Indian storytelling on a global platform.
Shahana Goswami’s heartfelt acknowledgement of the Indian contribution to Santosh underscores the collective effort behind its success. The film is a testament to the growing influence of Indian talent and narratives in international cinema. Whether or not Santosh secures the Oscar nomination, it has already set an inspiring precedent for future collaborations.
As Santosh approaches its Academy Awards journey, the film stands tall as a celebration of storytelling, unity, and cultural pride. Shahana’s performance, combined with Sandhya Suri’s direction, reflects the essence of modern cinema - one that transcends borders and connects audiences globally.
