The romantic drama Sanam Teri Kasam, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, has achieved a rare cinematic feat with its theatrical re-release after nine years. The film, which struggled at the box office during its initial 2016 release, has now found a fresh wave of success, surpassing its original lifetime earnings within just 48 hours.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Sanam Teri Kasam grossed an impressive Rs 4.25 crore on the first day of its re-release—more than three times its original opening-day collection. The momentum carried into the second day, with a 15% increase in earnings, bringing in Rs 5 crore. This takes its total two-day collection to a staggering Rs 9.50 crore, overtaking the film’s original lifetime earnings of Rs 8 crore.

The unexpected resurgence of Sanam Teri Kasam can be attributed to its immense popularity on OTT platforms and television reruns over the years. The film, which initially failed to make a mark in theatres, gained a devoted fanbase through digital platforms, where it was widely appreciated for its emotionally charged storytelling and soul-stirring music.

This phenomenon follows a growing trend where previously underappreciated films receive a second chance at the box office. Similar successes have been observed with movies like Laila Majnu and Tumbbad, which found their audiences post-theatrical release and later benefited from re-releases.

Speaking about the film’s re-release, lead actor Harshvardhan Rane shared his heartfelt thoughts in an interview with SCREEN:

'I hope it does what it didn’t do earlier, that’s it. Kya feel karoon main? Everyone was asking me everywhere to bring this film back. The only anecdote I remember is that we all expected this film to do much better than it did. That void has pushed me today to request everyone to release this. Nau saal hogaye hain (It has been nine years), they keep losing faith every year, but my faith keeps increasing. When it didn’t perform well, we all (the producers, director, actors) felt that pain, a tug in the heart.'

The remarkable box office run of Sanam Teri Kasam is not an isolated case. Hollywood’s Interstellar, another film that has seen multiple re-releases worldwide, has also witnessed strong numbers in India. The Christopher Nolan-directed sci-fi epic grossed Rs 2.40 crore on its re-release’s opening day, followed by a 40% jump on day two, collecting Rs 3.25 crore. With a two-day total of ₹5.65 crore, Interstellar has demonstrated the rising audience demand for cinematic experiences beyond initial box office runs.

With the overwhelming response in just two days, Sanam Teri Kasam is expected to continue its upward trajectory in the coming days. If the trend holds, the film might achieve a total collection far exceeding its original run, reinforcing the power of re-releases in the modern era.

The success of Sanam Teri Kasam highlights a significant shift in audience behaviour, where films are no longer solely judged by their initial box office numbers. Instead, longevity, nostalgia, and digital traction play a crucial role in determining a film’s ultimate success. Could this inspire other underappreciated films to return to the big screen? Only time will tell.
