A brutal incident in Dehradun has once again brought the issue of racial prejudice and violence against people from India’s Northeast into sharp focus. The death of a young MBA student following a racially motivated attack has sparked outrage, grief, and urgent calls for accountability across states.
The victim, a promising student from Tripura pursuing higher education in Uttarakhand, was allegedly targeted with racial slurs before being fatally stabbed. What began as a confrontation escalated into violence that would ultimately claim his life days later in hospital, leaving behind a devastated family and a shaken student community.
As details of the incident emerged, political leaders, civil society groups, and student organisations condemned the attack, calling it a wake-up call for authorities and institutions to confront racism and ensure safety for students from the Northeast living and studying across India.
A promising life cut short in Dehradun
The victim, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student, was among the brightest in his class and had already secured a placement with a private company. A football enthusiast known for his discipline and ambition, he dreamed of beginning his professional career immediately after graduation.
Coming from a middle-class family in Tripura, his education was made possible through a student loan, reflecting the family’s faith in the transformative power of learning. His academic success was not just a personal milestone but a source of pride and hope for his parents and relatives.
That future was violently disrupted on December 9, when he stepped out with his younger brother in Dehradun, unaware that a casual outing would end in tragedy.
Racial slurs and escalation into violence
According to accounts shared by student representatives and recorded in the complaint, a group of six individuals, including two juveniles, allegedly initiated an argument with the brothers. The confrontation quickly took a racial turn, with the attackers reportedly calling them derogatory names linked to their appearance and identity.
The victim reportedly tried to clarify that they were from Tripura and Indian citizens, but the taunts continued. Hoping to avoid further trouble, the brothers attempted to leave the area, even starting their motorcycle to get away from the confrontation.
Despite this, the situation escalated when the attackers allegedly struck the younger brother and then turned on the victim, stabbing him with a knife. The violence left him critically injured and fighting for his life.

Following the attack, the student was rushed to hospital, where doctors initially believed he might recover. Friends, faculty members, and family members remained hopeful as he responded to treatment in the early days.
