After Diwali, air pollution has increased sharply across India. Delhi-NCR is the worst affected, with many areas showing 'Very Poor' air quality. A total of 36 areas in Delhi are now in the red zone. The northern hill states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh also have polluted air. Meanwhile, a cyclone is forming in the Bay of Bengal and may bring heavy rain to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Diwali Celebrations and Pollution Rise

Diwali celebrations have caused pollution to rise. The morning after the festival, Delhi and nearby cities started the day with smog and polluted air. Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram saw their air quality index (AQI) increase quickly.

Delhi-NCR Red Zone

After Diwali, Delhi's air quality has become very poor. Most areas are now in the red zone. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), AQI near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was 317 in the morning. Some areas even crossed 400.

Even though only green firecrackers were allowed by the Supreme Court, a few hours of fireworks made the air toxic. Because of this, GRAP-2 measures have been applied in Delhi to control pollution.

Hilly States Experience Pollution Rise

In the northern hills, the air has also turned unhealthy. Dehradun recorded an AQI of 218, while Nainital touched 164, both higher than usual. The smoky layer has reduced visibility in some areas, indicating that post-Diwali smog is no longer confined to the plains.

Foggy Mornings in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

Uttar Pradesh saw hazy mornings in most districts. The weather is expected to stay dry for the next few days. After October 22, colder weather may arrive.

Bihar is in the green zone with no expected rain. The mornings and evenings will be cool, but daytime temperatures may rise due to sunlight.

Cyclone Alert in Bay of Bengal

  • While the north stays dry, a cyclone is forming in the Bay of Bengal. It may strengthen starting today.
  • The Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu may face heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms between October 21–23.
  • Fishermen are advised to stay away from the sea until conditions improve.

Summary:

After Diwali, pollution has increased sharply in Delhi-NCR and northern states, leading to GRAP-2 measures. At the same time, a Bay of Bengal cyclone may bring heavy rain and strong winds to southern coastal areas. Residents should follow local weather and pollution updates.
