NTPC Coal Laden Goods Train Accident: Two goods trains collided near Barhet yard on NTPC's MGR line on Tuesday morning. The collision was quite severe. After the collision, there was a huge explosion and many bogies including the engines of both trains were blown to pieces.
According to the information, after the incident, the engine of the coal laden goods train caught fire. In this accident, two loco pilots of the already parked goods train died.
Four employees were injured in this accident. The injured were sent to Barhet CHC for treatment where they were referred after first aid.
The injured were sent to Malda for treatment
The injured have been sent to Malda. The deceased include 32-year-old Ambuj Mahato, a resident of Sector 9 in Bokaro district and Gyaneshwar Mal, a resident of Jiaganj in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.
Names of the injured surfaced
The injured included Jitendra Kumar, 32, Uday Mandal, 45, Ram Ghosh, 55, and TK Nath, 48. Two goods trains carrying coal collided at around 3:30 am on Tuesday.
A goods train was going from Lalmatia towards Farakka. While the other goods train was standing on the empty track to go from Farakka to Lalmatia.
The engine caught fire, this is how the accident happened
It has been learnt that after the incident, the engine of the goods train caught fire. People also informed the fire department about this.
After this, two fire engines were sent from Sahibganj and Rajmahal. The fire fighters reached the spot and controlled the fire. It is said that the empty goods train going from Farakka to Lalmatia was standing on the side line built in Barhet.
The goods train carrying coal to Farakka had to go straight, but due to the controller's mistake, it also went on the side line and collided with the goods train already standing there.
Both goods trains had two engines each. Even after more than four and a half hours of the incident, no NTPC official had reached the spot till 8 am. This caused a lot of anger among the workers.
This track is not of Indian Railways
Indian Railways has clarified its position on the incident of collision of goods trains carrying coal. Railways has said that this MGR line (merry go round) owned by NTPC is a private track. It is operated by NTPC itself.
The railways said that this railway line connects Kahalgaon and Farakka thermal power plants and is commonly known as 'NTPC Lalmatia MGR'. Hence, this accident has no connection with Indian Railways.
According to the information, after the accident, NTPC has sought help from the Malda division of the railways. Under this, a request has been made to send a 140 tonne crane.
Railway CPRO D Dutta in Kolkata said that the crane is being sent from Sahibganj and all possible help is being provided to NTPC officials in the rail track restoration work.
