On Monday, October 6, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the Nobel Prize in Medicine. The 2025 prize was awarded to Mary E. Brunko of the United States, Fred Ramsdell of the United States, and Shimon Sakaguchi of Japan.
Nobel Prize 2025: Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi Honored in Medicine
The Nobel jury said, "They are honored for their research on controlling the immune system. This discovery represents a significant contribution to the field of medicine." The trio was awarded the prize for their discoveries related to peripheral immune tolerance.
The Nobel Prize Committee stated, "Their discoveries have laid the foundation for a new field of research. This will help advance the treatment of cancer and immune-deficiency diseases."
Who will receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2024?
The Nobel Prize in Medicine, commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has been awarded for nearly 125 years. Between 1901 and 2024, 229 scientists have been awarded this prize for their outstanding research. Last year, the prize was awarded to Gary Ruvkun and American citizen Victor Ambrose for the discovery of microRNAs.
Nobel Prize 2025 winner list:
- Mary Brunkow: Helped link FOXP3 gene defects to immune disorders like IPEX, establishing this gene's role in regulatory T cells.
- Fred Ramsdell: Co-identified the role of FOXP3 and its mutations in diseases like scurfy mice and IPEX, showing how regulatory T cells maintain immune balance.
- Shimon Sakaguchi: Discovered regulatory T cells (CD4+CD25+) that suppress overactive immune responses, defining peripheral immune tolerance.
