Navratri is one of the grandest Hindu festivals, celebrated with devotion, joy, and enthusiasm throughout India. Each of the nine days is dedicated to one unique form of Goddess Durga. Day 6 of Navratri 2025, which falls on September 27, 2025, the Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwina, is devoted to the worship of Maa Katyayani, the warrior goddess known for her courage and strength.
Significance of Day 6 of Navratri
The sixth day of Navratri is spiritually very powerful. On this day, devotees worship Maa Katyayani, who is considered one of the fiercest forms of Goddess Durga. She is known as the destroyer of demons and negativity, and is worshipped for courage, prosperity, and protection from evil forces. Her divine aura is described as radiant as thousands of suns. She rides a lion, holding a sword and a lotus in her hands, while her other two hands bless her devotees with fearlessness and protection.

Maa Katyayani is also considered the ruler of the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati). According to astrology, those who face difficulties due to a weak Jupiter in their horoscope should pray to Maa Katyayani on this day to overcome obstacles in marriage, career, and personal growth. She is also known as Maa Mahishasurmardini, as she defeated the demon king Mahishasura, symbolising the victory of good over evil.
The Story of Maa Katyayani
According to Hindu scriptures, there was once a sage named Katyayan who was a great devotee of Goddess Parvati. He wished to have the Goddess as his daughter. To fulfil his desire, he performed severe penance and prayers. Pleased with his devotion, Goddess Parvati blessed him by taking birth as his daughter. Since she was born in the ashram of Sage Katyayan, she came to be known as Katyayani. This story highlights the goddess’s divine connection with devotion, protection, and blessings for her devotees.
