What started as a picturesque honeymoon in the serene hills of Meghalaya has now spiralled into a chilling murder mystery, gripping the entire country. Raja Raghuvanshi, a young man from Indore, had recently tied the knot with his 24-year-old wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. The couple set out for a romantic trip to Meghalaya, but only one would return under a shroud of suspicion.

On May 23, the newlyweds were last seen exploring the lush landscapes near Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra, Meghalaya. Initially, the case was treated as a missing tourist case. But as the days dragged on with no sign of the couple, concern deepened, until June 2, when Raja's lifeless body was found in a deep gorge, bearing two brutal head injuries.

That moment flipped the narrative from a missing persons report to a full-blown murder investigation.

At the heart of this dark tale lies Raj Kushwaha, a 21-year-old man from Indore, who police believe had a romantic involvement with Sonam. Arrested during a late-night raid, Raj is now considered a prime suspect and the possible mastermind behind the operation. According to police, Raj orchestrated the crime from a distance, never setting foot in Meghalaya himself.

But he didn’t act alone.

Also arrested were Vishal Singh Chauham (22) from Indore, Akash Rajput (19) from Lalitpur, and Anand Singh Kurmi (23) from Sagar district. These three are believed to be the direct assailants who carried out the heinous act under Raj’s direction.

Sonam Raghuvanshi, the victim’s wife, is now under police scanner. Currently in custody in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, she is expected to be brought to Meghalaya for further interrogation. Authorities aren't ruling out her role in plotting the murder, stating that her involvement 'cannot be ruled out' at this stage.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, East Khasi Hills, confirmed that the investigation suggests a premeditated crime driven by personal relationships. 'Connecting the dots places Raj and Sonam at the centre,' Syiem noted.

The search for Raja’s body and the culprits was no less than a herculean task. With heavy rains lashing the area and the unforgiving terrain around the waterfalls, police teams faced enormous challenges. The lack of CCTV footage and limited tourist surveillance systems in the region only complicated matters.

Two teams were dispatched, one to Uttar Pradesh and another to Madhya Pradesh. Coordinated raids across these states led to the arrests, showcasing determined inter-state police collaboration. A third team was sent to Ghazipur, where Sonam eventually surrendered.

Although several arrests have been made and the alleged lovers are now in custody, many questions remain unanswered. What led to this shocking betrayal? Was Sonam coerced, or was she a willing participant? And most importantly, was this a crime of passion, or something far more sinister?

As the investigation continues and the suspects are brought together for questioning in Meghalaya, India, the country watches closely. This is more than just a tragic end to a honeymoon, it’s a tale of love gone deadly, a crime that cuts through trust, and a haunting reminder of how little we sometimes know the people closest to us.
